9-1-1 Tips
When should I call 9-1-1?
- To Save A Life or Person in Trouble
- To Stop A Crime
- To Report a Fire
- Anytime an Emergency Response is Required by Law Enforcement, Fire, or Emergency Medical Personnel
You should call 9-1-1 anytime you believe there is an actual emergency. If you are unsure, call 9-1-1 and the dispatcher will make the final determination.
What will I hear on the other end when I call 9-1-1? In Carroll County normally you will hear 2 rings followed by some tones and then 1 ring. Because of the way 9-1-1 is set up in Carroll County, the Communication Center actually receives or hears the call on the third ring. DO NOT HANG UP! Our dispatchers are waiting for your call.
Does the Communication Center ever close? The Communication Center has two dispatchers on duty 365/24/7. Sometimes when we expect high call levels, we staff a third dispatcher. We are always open.
How will my call be handled by the 9-1-1 dispatcher? When you call 9-1-1 to report an emergency, you will hear: "Carroll County 9-1-1, Where is your emergency?" Give the location of where the emergency responders are needed. The call taker will continue to ask you questions, while his/her partner/dispatcher will be dispatching emergency services. If it is safe to do so, please answer the questions and stay on the phone. The calltaker needs to confirm any information he/she sees. The more information the responders have, the better prepared they are to deal with your emergency.
Why does 9-1-1 send emergency response vehicles for hang up calls? Every 9-1-1 call must have a response. If the Communication Center receives call back information and an address, we try to call that number back. If we can't get a response, we send emergency vehicles. It is important for the public to know that even if they can't speak, but can dial 9-1-1, emergency vehicles will be responding!
Does my cell phone work in Carroll County? The Carroll County Communication Center is diligently working to enable all cell phone information to come into the center. If possible know the emergency address or describe the surroundings. Give your cell phone number in case we get disconnected, remember to STAY CALM!! We can't help you if we can't get the information from you.
What can I do to help myself?
- KNOW YOUR MEDICAL HISTORY, ALLERGIES, AND/OR MEDICATIONS;
- INFORM YOUR CHILDREN AND OTHER MEMBERS IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY, ADDRESSES AND
IMPORTANT PHONE NUMBERS;
- MAKE A TEST CALL FROM YOUR CELL PHONE AND LANDLINE. USE IT BEFORE YOU NEED IT.
- LOCK YOUR KEY PAD ON YOUR CELL PHONE, THIS SAVES CALL FROM BEING MADE UNINTENTIONALLY BY SITTING ON THE
PHONE ETC, ACCIDENTLY TYING UP THE LINE;
- STAY CALM!
- STAY ON THE LINE IF IT'S SAFE TO DO SO!
- FOLLOW THE DISPATCHERS INSTRUCTIONS! WE'RE HERE FOR YOU!
Can I call 9-1-1 using my old cell phone? Even though you may not have service on your cell phone, if you have power you can call 9-1-1. However, call back information doesn't come through to the 9-1-1 center. So you must be sure and give your call back information. Children playing with your old cell phone, can inadvertently call 9-1-1, which ties up the line for legitimate emergency calls, dispatchers, and poses a very BIG problem. Lock the key pad and you can save both work for the responders and embarrassment to you when the police shows up at your door!
The future of 9-1-1 in Carroll County. 9-1-1 in Carroll County continues to be a high priority for the Carroll County Communication Center. We will continue to train our staff at the maximum level, while expecting the most from each. As the technology changes, we will update and upgrade the equipment in order to maintain the publics' high level of expectation. Resolutions to hurdles such as Voice over Internet Protocol, (VoIP), which allows calls to be made using the internet, will continue to be a high priority. While dealing with Homeland Security issues, the center will continue to prepare for the least expected emergencies.
For each 9-1-1 emergency call, each telecommunicator's goal is to enable responders to get YOU the help you need as fast as possible in order that YOU may have a positive outcome.
